Why is a fridge’s capacity measured in litres?
Fridges are measured in litres as it is a familiar unit of measurement for many people and a very precise one too; manufacturers can accurately quantify the interior space of a fridge.
How do I choose the right refrigerator size?
To choose the right-sized fridge for your family, you need to consider 2 factors; the physical dimensions of the fridge and the capacity of the fridge. Physical dimensions are usually driven by the available installation space, whilst capacity is driven by the needs of the household. Larger families will require a greater capacity of 300+ litres and a larger dimensioned integrated or freestanding fridge, or even an American-style double-door fridge.
What sized fridge is best for a family of 4?
For a family of 4, we’d recommend a fridge with a capacity of approximately 200 to 300 litres. Think about the shopping amount that fills your fridge; this recommended size can hold around 10 to 15 shopping bags worth of food.
How do I install a fridge?
Always read the instructions manual for your fridge, as not all fridges are the same. This is a typical* installation process;
- Prepare and measure the space before making your purchase.
- Unpack and position the fridge.
- Your kitchen should have an easily accessible isolator switch nearby. Test that this is the isolator for the socket before proceeding.
- Once tested, ensure this is turned OFF.
- Then, plug in the fridge to the nearest socket (normally underneath the kitchen cabinets). That socket can be turned on, as long as the isolator is correctly turned OFF.
- If you are installing an integrated fridge, install the front cabinetry door in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
- Adjust shelves and drawers to your liking.
- Clean the interior to remove any packaging residue.
- After 12 hours, turn on the isolator switch. You will normally be able to hear the compressor running, and the fridge light will work when the door is open.
- Monitor fridge temperature over time
- Once at the desired temperature, insert your food
* Note: This is an abbreviated guide and does not constitute formal instructions. As always, refer to the relevant instructions for your product, and if in doubt, seek the help of a professional installer.
How often should I clean my fridge?
General cleaning of the entire fridge is recommended every 3 months, but clean accordingly when spills and mess occur to avoid bacteria growth.
How much ventilation should I leave around my fridge?
For freestanding fridges, it is recommended that you leave approximately 2.5cm around the sides of the fridge to ensure proper ventilation, keeping the vents clear. As always, we recommend checking the manufacturer's instructions or speaking with the retailer before purchasing as part of your measuring stage.
How can I maximise energy efficiency with my fridge?
To maximise energy efficiency, keep the door seals clean and intact, minimise the frequency and duration of door-opening, set the temperature control to the recommended settings and ensure proper ventilation around the fridge.
What common mistakes are there to avoid?
Common mistakes that people often make with fridges include:
- Forgetting to allow space for airflow
- Forgetting to consider space for the door to open, either in terms of side units, or even nearby island units
- Forgetting to include handles when measuring door swing
- Not checking for obstructions to the rear of the unit including pipes, skirting boards, etc
- Not checking the pathway for installation/removal of a fridge
